Ionising Radiation Protection Act, 2005
An Act to establish the Radiation Protection Authority, define its functions and powers, protect the public from radiation hazards, and repeal the Ionising Radiation Act, 1972; Date of Assent: 28th September, 2005.
Authority
The Radiation Protection Authority established by section five of the Act.
Authorisation
A permission granted in writing by the Board to a person to carry out a practice or any other action authorised under the Act, including registration or a licence.
Board
The Radiation Protection Authority Board constituted under section six.
Clearance
Removal of radioactive materials or radiation devices within authorised practices from any further control by the Board.
Clearance levels
Values established by the Board and expressed in terms of activity concentration or total activity, at or below which sources of radiation may be released from regulatory control.
Disease
Includes injury and bodily or mental deficiency or abnormality.
Dose limit
The value of the effective dose or the equivalent dose to individuals from controlled practices that shall not be exceeded.
Emergency
A sudden situation associated with an incident arising from the exposure of the public or the environment to the harmful effects of ionising radiation.
Environment
The total terrestrial, atmospheric and aquatic environs, but excluding the area within the boundaries of prescribed installations handling radioactive material or radiation sources.
Executive Director
The person appointed under section nineteen who serves as the chief executive officer of the Authority and the Secretariat for a term of 4 years.
Exposure
The act or condition of being subject to irradiation, including external exposure from sources outside the body or internal exposure from sources inside the body.
Facility
An assembly of devices, equipment, structures or natural features which serves some specific purpose or performs some specific functions.
Former Board
The Radiation Protection Board established by section five of the Ionising Radiation Act (Cap. 311).
Harmful ionizing radiation
Ionizing radiation of sufficient intensity as to entail significant risk of disability or disease as a result of exposure.
Ionizing radiation
For the purpose of radiation protection, means radiation capable of producing ion pairs in biological materials.
Limit
The value of a quantity used in certain specified activities or circumstances that must not be exceeded.
Practice
Any human activity that introduces additional sources of exposure or modifies the network of exposure pathways from existing sources, increasing the exposure or likelihood of exposure of people.
Qualified expert
An individual recognized as having expertise in a relevant field of specialisation by virtue of certification by appropriate boards, professional licenses, or academic qualifications.
Radiation Safety Officer
An officer appointed under section thirty-five to monitor, inspect, and enforce the provisions of the Act.
Radioactive material
Any material emitting ionizing radiation including neutrons as to entail significant risk of disability or disease as a result of exposure.
Radionuclide
A nuclide that is radioactive.
Secretariat
The administrative body of the Authority constituted under section eighteen, responsible for implementing the decisions of the Board.
Source
Anything that may cause radiation exposure by emitting ionising radiation or releasing radioactive substances or materials.
Enforcement notice
A notice served by the Board on a licensee who is contravening or is likely to contravene provisions of the Act or conditions of their licence.
Penalty unit
A unit of currency used to define fines; for example, unauthorized disclosure of information carries a fine not exceeding 3000 penalty units.
