Petrous part
The rocklike, pyramid-like portion of the temporal bone that contains the middle ear and inner ear.
Tegmen Tympani
The roof of the middle ear that separates it from the middle cranial fossa (temporal lobe); infection here can lead to a temporal lobe abscess.
Arcuate Eminence
A bulge in the roof of the internal ear produced by the Superior Semicircular Canal (SSC).
SSC dehiscence
A condition where the bone over the Superior Semicircular Canal is thin or gaping, allowing a rise in Intra-Cranial Pressure to stimulate the inner ear.
Meckel's Cave
A depression containing the Gasserian ganglion (ganglion of Cranial Nerve V), where the nerve splits into ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular branches.
Dorello's Canal
A canal present at the petrous apex through which Cranial Nerve VI passes.
Petrositis
An infection of the petrous apex characterized by ear complaints and diplopia due to involvement of Cranial Nerve VI.
Internal Acoustic Meatus (IAM)
A passage connecting the inner ear to the posterior cranial fossa, containing Cranial Nerves VII and VIII, through which Acoustic neuromas can spread.
Jugular Foramen
A junction of the petrous and occipital bone where Cranial Nerves IX, X, and XI, and the jugular bulb pass.
Sigmoid Sinus
The structure forming the posterior boundary of the mastoid that continues as the Internal Jugular Vein (IJV).
Stylomastoid Foramen
An opening between the styloid process and mastoid where the facial nerve exits; involvement causes facial nerve palsy.
Internal Carotid Artery (ICA)
An artery related to the anterior wall of the middle and inner ear that enters the carotid canal and later the cavernous sinus.
HRCT
High Resolution CT scan; recognized as the best investigation for conditions of the middle ear and temporal bone fractures.
Squamous part
One of the major parts of the temporal bone, located superficially alongside the mastoid, tympanic, and styloid parts.
Jugular Bulb
A structure located in the floor of the middle ear; tumors here can project through the floor.
Mastoid Air Cells
Small air-filled spaces in the mastoid process of the temporal bone that communicate with the middle ear; can become infected, leading to mastoiditis.
Facial Nerve Pathways
The course of the facial nerve (Cranial Nerve VII) as it exits the skull, important for facial muscle movement and innervation.
Conductive Hearing Loss
A type of hearing loss resulting from problems in the outer or middle ear that prevent sound from being conducted to the inner ear.
Anatomy of the Inner Ear
The structure of the inner ear, including components like the cochlea, vestibule, and semicircular canals, responsible for hearing and balance.
Ossicles
Three small bones in the middle ear (malleus, incus, stapes) that transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.
