Ectopic heartbeat
Any region of spontaneous firing of the heartbeat other than the pacemaker.
Mean arterial pressure (MAP)
Diastolic pressure plus one third of the pulse pressure.
Pulmonary and aortic valves
Heart valves that prevent backflow and control blood flow from the ventricles.
Hydrostatic pressure
The pressure exerted by a fluid at equilibrium due to the force of gravity.
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR)
The rate at which blood is filtered in the kidneys, indicative of kidney function.
Colloid osmotic pressure
The pressure exerted by proteins in blood plasma that pulls water into the circulatory system.
Afferent arteriole
The blood vessel that carries blood to the glomerulus of the kidney.
Efferent arteriole
The blood vessel that carries blood away from the glomerulus of the kidney.
Proximal convoluted tubule (PCT)
The first segment of the renal tubule that reabsorbs water, ions, and nutrients.
Loop of Henle
The section of the nephron that is responsible for concentrating urine.
