Social Control
A way or method used to encourage someone to behave in accordance with society. Society can invite, educate, and force community members to comply with applicable social values and norms.
Goals of Social Control
Prevent social deviation, strengthen public confidence in social norms, provide rewards to citizens who obey norms, develop feelings of shame and fear, uphold the legal system, and maintain social order.
Nature of Social Control
Preventive (action taken to prevent deviation) and Repressive (action taken after deviation occurs).
Methods of Social Control
Persuasive (without violence) and Coercive (with violence).
Gossip
A form of control carried out by talking about the perpetrators of deviations that have not necessarily been proven true, done to make the perpetrators aware so they do not behave deviantly again.
Ostracism
The act of isolating or alienating perpetrators of deviation in society.
Other Forms of Social Control
Reprimands, mockery/ridicule, and intimidation.
Fraundulens
Has two meanings: Asking for help from other people to solve problems or scaring perpetrators of deviations by using stronger people.
Institutions of Social Control
Family, Education, Religion, and Law.
