Ecosystem
A group of biotic and abiotic things interacting with each other.
Biome
A region of earth's surface and other particular combination of climate plants and animals that are found within it.
Biotic factors
include all living things eg. dog, cat, person, plant
Abiotic factors
include all non-living factors eg. temperature, light, intensity, wind speed, rainfall, Ph, salinity
Habitat
where a population of organisms live, provides food, water and shelter for organisms. eg. desert, coast, rainforest
Population
A group of living organisms, same species, same place at the same time.
Community
When different populations interact with each other.
Food Chain
Shows the transfer of energy from one producer to one tertiary consumer.
Food Web
A complex diagram representing the many energy pathways in an ecosystem
Producer
An organism that makes it's own food.
Consumer
An organism that obtains energy by eating other organisms
Trophic levels
The levels of organisms consuming one another
Autotroph
An organism that makes its own food
Heterotroph
Organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes; also called a consumer. Cannot make it's own food.
Photosynthesis
The process of plants or algae converting light energy from the sun into chemical energy.
Chloroplast
An organelle found in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs
Chlorophyll
A green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants
Glucose
A simple sugar that is an important source of energy.
Cellular respiration
the process of converting energy stored in glucose into the usable form of energy (ATP).
ATP
the useable form of energy converted during cellular respiration.
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the site of ATP (energy) production
