Low carbon/mild steel
Ferrous. tough and ductile. rusts easily if not protected. used for car bodies, steel building frames, pipelines.
cast iron
Ferrous. Hard but brittle. resists deformation and rust. Used for kitchen pans, machine bases, manhole covers.
High carbon steel
Ferrous. Hard, but brittle. Hard wearing, resists abrasion and retains its shape. used for tools, blades and scissors.
Zinc
Non-ferrous. Brittle, yet malleable. High corrosion resistance. used to galvanise steel.
Copper
Non-ferrous. Ductile and malleable. Good electrical conductor. used for plumbing supplies and electrical cables.
Tin
Non-ferrous. malleable and ductile, high corrosion resistance. good electrical conductor. used for soldering, plating surfaces such as cans.
Aluminium
Non-ferrous. light weight, ductile, resists corrosion. used for bike frames, drink cans, and takeaway containers.
