Vitis vinifera
The main Eurasian species of grapevine, used nearly exclusively in winemaking.
Phylloxera
An insect pest that attacks grapevine roots and is resistant to most grapevine species.
Cutting
A method of propagation where a section of a vine shoot is planted to grow a new plant.
Layering
A propagation technique where a section of a vine is bent and buried to take root while still attached to the parent plant.
Clone
A genetically identical vine derived from a single parent plant, often showing slight variations due to mutations.
Cross-fertilisation
The process of transferring pollen from the male part of one vine's flower to the female part of another to create new grape varieties.
Hybrid
A vine whose parents are from two different grapevine species, often including at least one American vine.
Rootstock
The part of the plant that is grafted onto, which provides resistance to pests like Phylloxera and supports vine growth.
Grafting
A horticultural technique where a rootstock is joined with a variety of V. vinifera to improve resistance or quality.
Expectations from Grafting
After successful grafting, the new vine will produce the fruit of the grafted variety at the first vintage cycle.
