Problems of wood analysis
Intimate ultrastructural & chemical association between wood components causing difficulties in quantitative seperation and determination of individual components due to:
Secondary reactions (degradation)
Change in bond types
Condensation
Polymerization & depolymerization
Oxidation/reduction
Lignin is major factor of these problems. Lignin remains associated with the isolated polysaccharides.
Cellulose and polyoses cannot be completely seperated without degradation of major components.
Types of analysis
Detail and accuracy may differ depending on application.
Types:
Moisture content determination
Ash content determination
Extractives determination
Lignin determination
Holocellulose: total polysaccharide fraction of wood
Summative analysis: sum of approximately all the components analyzed out of 100%.
