Biome
A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat.
Ecosystem
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Habitat
The natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism.
Climate
The long-term pattern of weather conditions in a particular area.
Topography
The arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area.
Tundra
A cold, treeless biome with low-growing vegetation, found in the Arctic and at high altitudes.
Deciduous forest
A forest made up mostly of trees that shed their leaves annually.
Coniferous forest
A forest predominantly composed of cone-bearing evergreen trees such as pines and firs.
Irrigation
The artificial application of water to land or soil to help grow crops.
Inputs
The resources (e.g., seeds, water, labor, fertilizers) used in the agricultural production process.
Transformation process
The stage in agriculture where inputs are converted into usable products, like growing crops or raising animals.
Outputs
The final products from farming, such as crops, meat, or milk.
Deforestation
The removal or clearing of forests, often to make way for agriculture or development.
Agricultural yield
The amount of crop or product produced per unit of land.
Sustainability
Using resources in a way that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.
Food Security
Having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.
Temperature drops 6.5 degrees every 100m
How does altitude affect temperature?
Physical availability, economic and physical access, food utilization, and stability.
Name four dimensions of food security.
When people move to settlements.
What is urbanization?
Something that forces or makes people move away from an area.
What are push factors?
Something that attracts or encourages people to move to an area.
What are pull factors?
The amount of people living in a certain area.
What is population density?
Climate affects temperature, air pressure, and the amount of radiant energy.
How does climate impact biomes?
Nutrient content, pH levels, soil texture.
What factors influence soil quality?
Irrigation systems (e.g., drip irrigation) and rainwater harvesting
Name two water management practices to help with water scarcity:
Tropics
Name the biome where Cocoa is mainly produced:
40%
What percentage of agricultural produce in Australia comes from the Murray Darling Basin?
