Matter

Anything that occupies space and possesses mass; all living organisms are constructed from matter.

Element

A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances through chemical reactions; there are 92 naturally occurring elements.

Compound

A substance formed by two or more different elements combined in a fixed ratio, such as Sodium Chloride, $\text{NaCl}$.

Emergent Properties

Properties exhibited by a compound that are completely distinct from those of its individual element constituents, such as Sodium ($\text{Na}$) and Chlorine ($\text{Cl}$) forming non-toxic Sodium Chloride ($\text{NaCl}$).
