Authoritarian Parenting
Children are expected to follow a set of strict rules established by parents. Failure to follow rules usually results in punishment. Parents fail to explain the reasoning behind these rules. This parenting style leads to obedident and proficient children, but who are lower in happiness, social competence and self-esteem.
Authoritative Parening
Rules are established and guidelines are excpected to be followed. This parenting style is much more democratic and parents are more responsive to their children and willing to listen to questions. When children fail to meet expectations, these parents are more nurturing and forgiving rather than punishing. This parenting style tends to result in those who are happy, capable, amd successful.
Permissive Parenting
Parents have very few demands on their children. These parents rarely discipline their children and are generally nurturing and communicative with their children. This parenting style can be seen as taking on the friend rather than parent role. This parenting style results in children who rank low in happiness and self regulation, experiencing problems with authority and tending to perform poorly in school.
Uninvolved Parenting
This parenting style is characterized by few demands, low responsiveness, and little communication. Even though these parents fulfill basic needs, they are generally detached from their children’s lives. Those who experience this parenting style rank lowest across all life domains and tend to lack self-control, have low self-esteem, and are less competent than their peers.
