Always more than one host — and the first one is always a snail. No snail, no fluke

Eggs are also characteristic: big, golden-brown with a lid on one end (operculum) – much larger than nematode and cestode eggs [Exception blood fluke]

A retractable, spiny attachment organ — the proboscis, the thorny head. The proboscis may deeply penetrate the intestinal wall; inflammation, ulceration, obstruction, and, in severe cases, perforation/peritonitis can occur.
