Module 6a Lecture - Intimacy and Empathy

Vocabulary and concepts regarding the development of intimacy, the Intimacy Process Model, and the role of empathic accuracy in relationships.

Intimacy

The development which occurs when a partner's responses to disclosures demonstrate understanding, validation, and caring.

Intimacy Process Model

A model describing how disclosures of self-relevant feelings and information lead to partner responses, which are then processed through an interpretive filter to determine if the individual feels understood, validated, and cared for.

Interpretive filter

A mechanism within the Intimacy Process Model based on an individual's motives, needs, goals, and fears that shapes how they interpret a partner’s disclosure or response.

A’s reaction to B’s response

The component of the Intimacy Process Model where person A evaluates whether they feel understood, validated, and cared for following person B's emotional and behavioral response.

Empathic accuracy

The ability to accurately infer the specific content of another person’s thoughts and feelings.

Benefits of Empathic Accuracy

Increases in intimacy, communication, and satisfaction for both partners.

Measuring Empathic Accuracy

A process involving watching a recording of a discussion, noting thoughts and feelings, guessing the partner's thoughts and feelings, and comparing those guesses with the partner’s actual responses.
