Dermal tissue
secretes a waxy film called a cuticle to form a physical barrier between a plant and its environment, reduces water loss and physical damage
Ground tissue
makes up most of plant interior, carries out metabolic processes
Vascular tissue
responsible for transporting water and nutrients around the plant
Parenchyma cells
majority of plant cells, responsible for photosynthesis and other metabolic activity
Sclerenchyma and collenchyma cells
Provide support to the plant
Xylem cells
responsible for transporting water and minerals from the roots to the leaves of the plant
Phloem cells
responsible for transporting sugars and other nutrients throughout the plant
Leaves
Sites of gas exchange and responsible for photosynthesis
Flowers
The sexual reproductive organs of flowering plants (angiosperms)
Fruits
Grown from a flower post fertilisation, protect seeds and often specialised to attract animals that aid with seed dispersal
Stems
Supports leaves, flowers, and fruits, transports water and nutrients between the roots and shoots
Roots
Absorption/storage of water and nutrients from the soil, anchors to the ground and provides structural support
Root system
responsible for providing support to the plant and water/nutrient absorption from soil
Shoot system
made up of reproductive organs, stems, and leaves
Cell
the smallest functional unit of a living organism
Tissue
a cluster of cells that perform a shared function
Organ
a combination of tissues and cells into a distinct structure that performs a specific function
Organ system
a collection of organs and tissues that perform specific functions necessary for survival
Muscle tissue
contracts to exert a force, made up of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle tissue
Nervous tissue
composed of neurons that detect stimuli/carry electrical signals and glia that assist in neuron signal transmission
Connective tissue
connects/supports other tissues and organs of the body
Epithelial tissue
Composes the external and internal layers of the body, assist in protection, secretion, and absorption
why cells in multicellular organisms must work together and coordinate their functions for the organism to survive
to allow specialised cells to perform their roles efficiently, supporting the organism to maintain all functions required to sustain life
