A political unit with the power to make and enforce laws over a group of people living within a clearly defined territory.
Characteristics of a State
Population, government, territory, sovereignty, and recognition.
Purposes of Government: People
Includes elected officials and non-elected officials.
Purposes of Government: Power
Divided into the legislative branch, executive branch, and judicial branch.
Purposes of Government: Policy
Encompasses laws and taxation.
Functions of Government
Ensure national security, maintain order, resolve conflict, provide services, and provide for the public good.
