MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
A type of bacteria resistant to several antibiotics including methicillin; requires contact precautions such as wearing a gown and gloves and isolating the client in a private room.
Negative Pressure Room
A specific isolation protocol used for clients requiring airborne precautions.
Food Poisoning Prevention (Beef)
Escherichiacoli bacteria are killed at 160∘F; therefore, beef patties should be heated to this temperature.
Pasteurized Milk
Milk that has undergone a process of sterilization, making it safer to consume than unpasteurized (raw) milk.
Elevated WBC (White Blood Cell) count
A laboratory value indicating the presence of an infection in the body.
Lung Crackles
An assessment finding that, when correlated with increased WBC, may indicate respiratory tract infections.
Dark Amber Urine
An assessment finding that usually presents as a sign of dehydration.
Meningococcal Meningitis
An infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis; requires droplet precautions because transmission occurs via direct contact or respiratory droplets.
Wound Infection Symptoms
Clinical indicators including a temperature of 102∘F, a wound site warm to touch, yellow drainage, and elevated white blood cells.
Post-Antibiotic Discharge Instruction
A instruction for clients receiving oral antibiotics for a wound to call the physician immediately if a fever occurs, as it may indicate recurrent infection.
TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) Infection Control
The practice of designating one specific port of a subclavian triple-lumen catheter for TPN to minimize infection risks caused by high glucose concentrations.
National Client Safety Standards for Surgery
A protocol requiring the client to mark the fractured site and sign their name on the site prior to receiving preoperative medication.
Neutropenic Precautions
Infection prevention measures including avoiding fresh flowers, fresh fruits, vegetables, enemas, suppositories, and rectal temperatures.
