Electromagnetic radiation
s a special kind of energy that travels in waves through space. It is like a wave that can move without needing anything else to carry it, even in a empty space.
types of electromagnetic radiation
1. radio waves
2. microwaves
3. infrared
4. visible light
5. ultraviolet
6. x-rays
7. gamma rays
Radio waves
waves that allow us to listen to the radio
Microwaves
- have shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies that radio waves
Radio waves
they have the longest wavelengths and lowest frequencies
Microwaves
used in microwave ovens to cook and heat food
Radio waves
- used for broadcasting music, news, and other information.
Microwaves
used for communication, such as cell phones and wifi.
Infrared radiation
- also called as HEAT RADIATION because we feel it as warmth
- has longer wavelengths than visible light
- used in devices like TV remote controls and thermal cameras.
Microwaves
can penetrate the ionosphere
Ionosphere
forms the boundary between we live and breathe and the vacuum of space.
Infrared radiation
- These are waves that lies beyond the red end of the visible light
- its wavelength is too long to be seen by naked eye
- it is most noticeable when given off by hot objects
Visible light
Electromagnetic radiation that can be seen with the unaided
eye
- comes in different colors like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Each color has a different wavelength.
Ultraviolet
- has shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than visible light
- comes from the sun and is responsible for causing sunnburns
- we cant see UV radiation, but it can be harmful to our skin and eyes.
Visible light
- is the segment of the electromagnetic spectrum that the human eye can view
- our eyes is sensitive to the range of wavelengths of white light. Thus, the spectrum of white light is therefore called the visible spectrum.
Ultraviolet
- they are invisible radiation that lie beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum
- although UV waves are invisible to the human eye, some insects, such as bumblebees, can see them.
X-Ray
- have even shorter wavelengths and higher frequencis that UV radiation
- can pass through our bodies and are used in medical imaging, like machines to see our bones and organs
Gamma Ray
- have the shortest wavelengths and highest frequencies of all the radiations
- produced during nuclear reactions and can be harmful
- use to treat cancers
X-Ray
-were discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895
- produced by the rapid acceleration of electrons in X-Ray machine that collide with atoms.
Gamma Ray
- they are emitted by stars and some radioactive substances
- They carry the highest amount of energy thus they are more dangerous.
X-Ray
- used for medical imaging and airport security scanning.
Visible Light
- the only type of wave visible to the human eye.
Infrared
- used in remote controls and thermal cameras
Gamma ray
has the shortest wavelength and highest energy
Microwave
used in cooking food and satellite communication
Ultraviolet
can cause sunburns and is used in sterilization
Radio wave
has the longest wavelength and is used in broadcasting and communication
