What is the overall goal of science?
To achieve a thorough understanding of the phenomena under study. In ABA, the focus is understanding and improving socially important behavior.This involves utilizing systematic observation and experimentation to gather reliable data and formulate evidence-based conclusions.
What are the three levels of scientific understanding?
Description, prediction, and control.These levels represent the progression from observing phenomena, anticipating outcomes, to manipulating variables for desired effects.
What is description?
Systematic observation that allows scientists to accurately describe a phenomenon. Descriptive knowledge consists of facts about observed events that can be quantified, classified, and examined for possible relationships.
What is prediction?
Prediction occurs when repeated observations reveal that two events systematically covary. The correlation can then be used to predict the relative probability of one event based on the presence of another.
Can a correlational study demonstrate a causal relationship?
No. Because the researcher does not manipulate or control the variables, correlation alone cannot establish that one variable caused changes in another.
Scenario: Researchers find that students who receive more teacher praise tend to have better academic performance. Can they conclude that praise caused the better performance?
No. The finding demonstrates a correlation, not a functional relation. Experimental manipulation would be needed to establish causation.
What is the highest level of scientific understanding?
Control. Because it proves a functional, cause-and-effect relationship.
What is a functional relation?
A functional relation exists when a well-controlled experiment demonstrates that a specific change in one event (the dependent variable) is reliably produced by a specific manipulation of another event (the independent variable), while ruling out extraneous factors.
What is required to demonstrate a functional relation?
Experimental manipulation and control sufficient to demonstrate that changes in the dependent variable reliably result from changes in the independent variable.
Scenario: A behavior analyst changes an intervention condition and the client's target behavior changes. Why isn't this alone enough to demonstrate a functional relation?
Because other variables could have produced the change. Experimental control is needed to rule out confounding variables.
What are the six assumptions/attitudes of science described in the chapter?
Determinism, Empiricism, Experimentation, Replication, Parsimony, Philosophic doubt
What is determinism?
The assumption that the universe is lawful and orderly and that phenomena occur as a result of other events.
Why is determinism important to behavior analysis?
Behavior analysis assumes that behavior is lawful and determined by identifiable conditions, making it possible to discover relationships between behavior and environmental variables.
Scenario: A behavior analyst says, “This behavior just happens randomly; there is no reason for it.” Which scientific assumption does this contradict?
Determinism.
What is empiricism?
The practice of objective observation and measurement of the phenomena of interest.
What does objectivity mean in empiricism?
Results are independent of the individual prejudices, tastes, and private opinions of the scientist and are open to observation by others.
Why is empiricism particularly important in behavior analysis?
Understanding, predicting, and improving behavior depends on accurately defining, systematically observing, and reliably measuring behavior.
What is experimentation?
The controlled comparison of a measure of the phenomenon of interest under two or more conditions in which only one factor at a time differs between conditions.
In an experiment, what is the independent variable?
The factor that is systematically manipulated by the researcher.
In an experiment, what is the dependent variable?
The behavior or other phenomenon being measured to determine the effect of the independent variable.
Scenario: A researcher changes the amount of reinforcement delivered and measures the rate of responding. What is the independent variable?
The amount of reinforcement delivered.
What is the purpose of experimental control?
To ensure that the conditions being compared are otherwise equivalent so that changes in the dependent variable can be attributed to the independent variable.
What is replication?
Repeating experiments, including repeating independent-variable conditions within experiments, to determine the reliability and usefulness of findings.
Why is replication important?
A single experiment is not sufficient to establish accepted scientific knowledge. Replication demonstrates reliability and helps scientists discover mistakes.
Is there a required number of replications before a finding is accepted?
No. However, the greater the importance of a finding, the greater the number of replications that should be conducted.
What is parsimony?
Simple, logical explanations should be ruled out experimentally or conceptually before more complex or abstract explanations are considered.
Scenario: A child refuses difficult tasks. Before proposing a complicated psychological explanation, the behavior analyst examines whether task difficulty, reinforcement, or escape contingencies account for the behavior. Which scientific attitude is being demonstrated?
Parsimony
What is philosophic doubt?
Continually questioning the truthfulness and validity of scientific knowledge and remaining open to the possibility that current findings or interpretations are wrong.
Scenario: A behavior analyst continues collecting data after an intervention appears successful because she wants to determine whether the finding continues to hold. Which attitude is demonstrated?
Philosophic doubt, along with the scientific practice of replication.
What is the definition of science given in the chapter?
Science is a systematic approach to understanding natural phenomena through description, prediction, and control, relying on determinism, empiricism, experimentation, replication, parsimony, and philosophic doubt.
