Community
A group of people living in the same place or having a characteristic in common (norms, religion, values, or identity).
Community dynamics
The changes in the community brought about by social, cultural and environmental experiences, whether positive or negative, that impact the community.
Community action
Any activity that aims to increase the understanding, engagement, and empowerment of communities for the purpose of giving services to people.
Urban
Terminology pertaining to highly industrialized communities.
Rural
Terminology pertaining to agricultural lands and pre-industrial communities.
Slums
A densely populated area usually crowded and having dirty, run-down housing.
Subdivision
An area of land that has been divided into smaller areas on which houses were built.
Social status
The level of prestige, privilege, and honor someone is perceived to have in society.
Social capital
The network of relationships within a society to function effectively.
Micro-level community
A community formed based on personal ties, often small groups pursuing common goals (e.g., a fundraising concert).
Macro-level community
A large group affiliation such as national, international, or virtual communities.
Geographical community
A community where members share the same geographical vicinity (village, province, or neighborhood).
Non-geographical community
A community formed based on needs, ideas, interests, identity, practices, and roles in social institutions (home, work, government, society, or the community at large).
Networks
The relationships within a community that enable collaboration and effective functioning.
Belonging
A sense of being part of a community and sharing in its identity and practices.
Diversity
Varied backgrounds, identities, and perspectives within a community that contribute to its social capital.
Bonding
Tight social ties within a close-knit group in a community (aspect of social capital).
Bridging
Connections between diverse groups that expand social networks (aspect of social capital).
Trust & safety
Expectations of reliability and safety within social networks (aspect of social capital).
Reciprocity
Mutual exchange of support and resources among community members.
Participation
Direct involvement of citizens in planning, governance, and development at local or grassroots levels.
Empowerment
Enabling people to independently decide, plan, and take action to control situations in their community.
Culture
Mores, values, and identity that form the common culture of a community.
Mores
Informal norms regulating behavior within a community.
Identity
A set of characteristics by which a person or group is recognized within a community.
Applied social sciences
The use of social science approaches to solve community problems through action and engagement.
