ilium
the ridge of the major portion of the os coxa. articulates with the sacrum
ischium
the distal, rounded, posterior portion of the os coxa. you sit on this part
pubis
the most anterior portion of the os coxa
acetabulum (acetabular fossa)
the huge fossa on the lateral side of the os coxa. This is the socket for the ball and socket joint of the leg
obturator foramen
the huge hole immediately inferior to the acetabulum
iliac crest
superior rim of the ilium
anterior superior iliac spine
the subtle bump on the anterior edge of the iliac crest
anterior inferior iliac spine
the subtle bump on the anterior edge of the iliac crest inferior to the anterior superior iliac spine
posterior superior iliac spine
a subtle bump on the posterior edge of the iliac crest
posterior inferior iliac spine
a subtle bump on the posterior edge of the iliac crest inferior to the posterior superior iliac spine
greater sciatic notch
a huge notch on the posterior side of the os coxa and inferior to the posterior inferior iliac spine
ischial spine
a pointy projection inferior to the distal aspect of the greater sciatic notch
head
the rounded portion at the proximal end of the femur that articulates with the acetabular fossa. The head is positioned medially
fovea capitis
a depression in the center of the head of the femur
greater trochanter
a rather large bulge lateral to the head of the femur
neck
the area between the head of the femur and the greater trochanter
lesser trochanter
a small bulge inferior to the neck of the femur located mostly on the medial aspect of the femur
medial condyle
a rounded process located at the distal end of the femur on the medial side. it is best seen on the posterior view of the femur
lateral condyle
a rounded process located at the distal end of the femur on the lateral side. it is best seen on the posterior view of the femur
intercondylar fossa
a depression between the medial and lateral condyles. this is the location for the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments
medial epicondyle
a bulge that is medial to the medial condyle
lateral condyle
a bulge that is lateral to the lateral condyle
intertrochanteric line
a small ridge extending from the greater trochanter to the lesser trochanter on the anterior side
intertrochanteric crest
a small ridge extending from the greater trochanter to the lesser trochanter on the posterior side
linea aspera
a subtle ridge extending from the lesser trochanteric down the center of the posterior femur
medial supracondylar line
a subtle ridge extending from the distal end of the linea aspera and angles medially
lateral supracondylar line
a subtle ridge extending from the distal end of the linea aspera and angles laterally
base
sort of flat in appearance. it is the superior portion of the patella
apex
sort of pointy area at the inferior end of the patella
intercondylar eminence
a pair of bumps on the most superior aspect of the tibia
intercondylar tubercles
each individual bump that comprises the intercondylar eminence. (left and right)
tibial tuberosity
a bulge just a few centimeters inferior to the patella on the anterior side. located proximally on the tibia
anterior border
a ridge that runs down the middle of the anterior tibia
medial malleolus
a bulge on the distal, medial end of the tibia. located medial to the ankle bones
head
proximal end of the fibula. sort of triangular shaped
lateral malleolus
a bulge on the distal, lateral end of the fibula. located lateral to the ankle bones
talus
the most superior tarsal bone. the tibia articulates with this bone
calcaneus
the most posterior tarsal bone
navicular
anterior to the talus
medial cuneiform
anterior to the navicular
intermediate cuneiform
anterior to the navicular and lateral to the medial cuneiform
lateral cuneiform
anterior to the navicular and lateral to the intermediate cuneiform
cuboid
lateral to the lateral cuneiform
