the site of photosynthesis, this creates a concentration gradient

survive in environments with limited water. they have structural features to enable efficient gas exchange to occur whilst also limiting water loss

  • curled leaves to trap moisture to increase local humidity (stomata face inwards so any water that does evaporate gets trapped, creating a humid atmosphere to reduce water potential gradient so less water evaporates out)
