what does the palisade mesophyll do?
the site of photosynthesis, this creates a concentration gradient
how does oxygen travel out?
due to the concentration gradient, oxygen will travel through the air spaces in the spongy mesophyll and diffuse out of the stomata created by the guard cells
where does carbon dioxide diffuse in from?
the stomata
how is water loss by evaporation reduced?
stomata close at night when photosynthesis isn’t occurring
what are xerophytic plants adapted to do?
survive in environments with limited water. they have structural features to enable efficient gas exchange to occur whilst also limiting water loss
what adaptations do xerophytic plants have?
curled leaves to trap moisture to increase local humidity (stomata face inwards so any water that does evaporate gets trapped, creating a humid atmosphere to reduce water potential gradient so less water evaporates out)
hairs to trap moisture to increase local humidity
sunken stomata to trap moisture to increase local humidity
thicker waxy cuticle to reduce evaporate
longer root network to reach more water
