Visual Perception
The process by which the brain interprets visual stimuli.
Depth Perception
The ability to see objects in three dimensions, allowing us to perceive distance.
Visual Cliff
A laboratory device used to test depth perception in infants and animals.
Monocular Cues
Distance cues available to either eye alone.
Binocular Cues
Depth cues that depend on the use of two eyes.
Retinal Disparity
The difference between the images received by the two eyes, which aids in depth perception.
Convergence
A neuromuscular cue where the two eyes move inward for near objects.
Relative Size
A monocular cue where smaller images are perceived as more distant.
Relative Clarity
A monocular cue where hazy objects are perceived as more distant.
Texture Gradient
A monocular cue where texture becomes finer as distance increases.
Interposition
A monocular cue where a closer object blocks the view of a distant object.
Linear Perspective
A monocular cue where parallel lines appear to converge in the distance.
Perceptual Constancy
The tendency to perceive objects as unchanging in shape, size, brightness, and color despite changes in illumination.
Color Constancy
Perceiving familiar objects as having consistent color despite changes in illumination.
Shape Constancy
Perceiving the form of familiar objects as constant, even when their images change.
Apparent Motion
An optical illusion that makes stationary objects appear to move when viewed in quick succession.
Stroboscopic Effect
The illusion of movement created when a series of still images are flashed rapidly.
Phi Phenomenon
An illusion of movement seen when adjacent lights blink on and off in succession.
Autokinetic Effect
An illusion where a stationary light in a dark environment appears to move.
