Adjective Clause
A subordinate clause that describes a noun or pronoun (the antecedent) in the main clause.
Antecedent (in adjective clauses)
The noun or pronoun that is described by the adjective clause.
Subjunctive with Uncertain Antecedent
Use the subjunctive when the antecedent of an adjective clause is unknown or uncertain.
Indicative with Certain Antecedent
Use the indicative when the antecedent of an adjective clause is known to exist.
Negative Pronouns and the Subjunctive
When the antecedent of an adjective clause is a negative pronoun (nadie, ninguno/a), the subjunctive is used.
Personal 'a' with Hypothetical Persons
Do not use the personal 'a' with direct objects that represent hypothetical persons.
Personal 'a' with Nadie and Alguien
Use the personal 'a' before nadie and alguien, even when their existence is uncertain.
Subjunctive in Questions
The subjunctive is commonly used in questions with adjective clauses when the speaker is trying to find out information about which he or she is uncertain.
Indicative in Response to Questions
If the person who responds to a question with an adjective clause knows the information, the indicative is used.
