Why did different nations go & what did they do in America?

The nations colonized the Americans for…GOLD, GOD, GLORY

They colonized by setting up governments, schools, residences, churches, & printing services

Also, set up plenty of plantations & mines

The Portuguese & Spanish used the encomienda system, which was based on nationality →

which shifted into enslaving just natives who did not possess any European blood →

gradually though, African slavery replaced native labor

Colonies got settled differently bc these countries did not have religious goals, instead they had economic goals.

Euro groups fought each other for territory

England did not have a good relationship with Amerindians, but the French did due to their cooperative fur business with Amerindians

What was the mit’a system?

  • one seventh of adult male Amerindians required to work 2-4 months per year

  • system broke down because so many Amerindians died working that Euros shifted to importing African slaves

What was indentured servitude?

  • the English used this system

  • servants (slaves) are bound by an indenture (contract) for 4 to 7 years in exchange for the payment of their trip to the NW

  • at the conclusion of the contract: servant’s go small bit of land, tools, and clothes
