Elaboration likelihood model
Involves people having either high or low levels of elaboration. The extent to which they are willing and able to scrutinize an argument
central route
Focuses on presenting information consisting of strong argument and facts- FOCUS IS ON LOGIC
peripheral route
Used in sales and other styles of persuasion to offer products or services at a bargain price in order to first attract a buyer, but the adds an additional expenses to make the purchase less of a bargain that originally thought
social facilitation
Improved performance on tasks in the presence of others. (If you are good at something you get better when others watch you.)
social inhibitation
Worse performance on tastes in the presence of others. (If you are NOT GOOD at something you get worse when others watch you.)
social loafing
When an individual in a group shows less effort that if he or she were doing it individually.
upward social comparison
When we compare ourselves to people doing better that we are
downward social comparison
When we compare ourselves to people doing worse that they are
relative deprivation theory
Explains that people tend to feel less satisfied with their lives when they engage in a lot of upward social comparison
deindiviation
When individuals lose their sense of self-awareness and self-control when they are in a large group- this can lead to riots
group polarization
When members of a group tend to think alike their opinions will strengthen with the more time they spend together and extreme views take over
bystander effect
John Darley studied this- involves the tendency for people not to offer help when they know that others are present and capable of helping
diffusion of responsibility
Occurs with the lessening of responsibility often experienced by individuals in groups
pluralistic ignorance
Involves a situation in which a majority of group members privately reject a norm, but incorrectly assume that most others accept it, and therefore go along with it
groupthink
Refers to a situation where people will try to keep harmony in a group and will lose sight of realistic alternatives to their thinking- Irving Janis

Terror management theory
Involves humans have distress and anxiety related to the awareness of mortality and the inevitability of death. Suggests that this anxiety and psychological distress is subdued by investment in cultural beliefs and world views
conformity
the tendency of individuals to change their attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors to align with the norms, expectations, or opinions of a social group
normative social influence
a psychological phenomenon where people change their behavior, opinions, or actions to fit in, be liked, or be accepted by a group
informational social influence
phenomenon where people conform to the beliefs, behaviors, or attitudes of others because they want to be correct and believe that others have more accurate information or expertise
