What is health?
A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity - WHO

An interchangeable concept with health: an active state of being promoting good physical, mental, and emotional health

What is the Health Belief Model?
Models the relationship between a person’s belief and th e resulting behaviors
What is the Health Promotion Model?
A dynamic state of pursuing health
What is the Holistic Health Model?
The relationship between body, mind, and spirit and how it affects health
What is primary health promotion?
Promotes health and prevents diseases and injuries (e.g., immunization clinics, family planning, poison control information)
What is secondary health promotion?
Focuses on screening for early detection of disease; identifies an illness and interventions to reverse and reduce severity or provide a cure (e.g., health screenings, dental cleanings, vision exams)
What is tertiary health promotion?
Begins AFTER an illness with the goal to reduce disability and rehabilitate patients to a maximum level of functioning (e.g., surgery, physical therapy, support groups)

Experiencing symptoms; recognizing that one or more symptoms are incompatible with one’s definition of health

Assuming the sick role; gives up normal activities, focuses on symptoms and bodily functions

Acceptance of the diagnosis and following the treatment plan and assuming the dependent role

Achieving recovery and rehabilitation; person gives up the dependent role and starts to resume normal activities
