VTOL

The Five Great Hurdles of Rotary Flight
The critical challenges consisting of Powerplant (sustained force), Weight (minimizing mass), Torque Reaction (fuselage spinning), Stability (control in fluid air), and Vibration (mechanical stress).

Pioneers who used an Austro-Daimler electric motor supplied by dynamo to attempt to replace flammable observation balloons.
The Autogyro
An aircraft invented by Juan de la Cierva in 1923 with an unpowered single rotor driven entirely by forward motion rather than direct engine power.
Articulated Rotor
A massive breakthrough by Juan de la Cierva involving blades that can hinge and flex, solving the lethal problem of asymmetric lift.
Focke Achgelis Fa 61 (1936)
The first truly successful helicopter, which neutralised torque using twin, tapered, articulated rotors on steel outriggers.
Igor Sikorsky & the VS-300 (1939)
The designer and aircraft that represented the first successful single lifting rotor helicopter in the U.S. and the first practical amphibious helicopter.
Vertical-Plane Tail Rotor
An innovation by Sikorsky that used a small, anti-torque blade to lock the fuselage in place, discarding the need for heavy structural outriggers.
