What is a fuel ?
a substance that releases energy when burned
How are fossil fuels formed ?
Fossil fuels are formed over millions of years. they are covered with sediment and oxygen is squeezed out. the organsims decompose very slowly to produce coal, oil and gas.
What happens to viscosity as you change the temperature ?
the higher the temperature means the thicker the liquid and less easy it flows the lower the temperature means the liquid is runny and flows easier
What is distillation ?
Distillation is separating a mixture of liquids by their boiling point.
What is complete combustion ?
oxygen + fuel -> water + carbon dioxide
What is incomplete combustion ?
little oxygen + fuel -> water + carbon monoxide
What gas is 78% to 80% of the atmosphere made out of ?
Nitrogen
what gas is 1/5 of the atmosphere made out of ?
Oxygen
what gas is 1% of the atmosphere made out of ?
Argon
How do you test for hydrogen ?
Put a lighted splint inside a tube and you will hear a pop if hydrogen is present
How do you test for oxygen ?
Put a glowing splint inside a test tube and if there is oxygen present the splint will relight.
How do you test for carbon dioxide ?
Bubble gas through limewater and if carbon dioxide is present the limewater will go cloudy
What is acid rain ?
When sulphur reacts with oxygen. it produces sulphur dioxide which reacts with water to produce sulphuric acid.
