Why do we balance chemical equations?
To ensure there is the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation.
What must be the same on both sides of a balanced equation?
The number of atoms of every element.
What do the large numbers in front of formulas represent?
They are coefficients and show the ratio/number of particles or molecules involved in the reaction.
Example:
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
What is the most important rule when balancing equations?
You may change the coefficients in front of formulas, but you must not change the subscripts inside formulas.
Why can't you change subscripts when balancing?
Changing a subscript changes the substance itself.
For example, H₂O and H₂O₂ are different substances.
