State the naming conventions for binary ionic compounds
Name of cation comes first and the anion second
The name of the cation is the same as the metal
add the suffix “-ide” to the root of the nonmetal
State the common name of the Cr cations
Cr²+ = Chromous
Cr³+ = Chromic
State the name of the Cu cations
Cu²+ = Cuprous
Cu³+ = Cupric
State the common names of the Fe cations
Fe²+ = Ferrous
Fe³+ = Ferric
State the common names of the Hg cations
Hg²+ = Mercurous
Hg³+ = Mercuric
State the common names of the Sn cations
Sn²+ = Stannous
Sn4+ = Stannic
State the naming conventions for ionic compounds with polyatomic ions
Same as for monoatomic ions but the suffix of the polyatomic ion is different
State the naming conventions for binary acids
hydro- + anion nonmetal root + -ic + acid
State the naming conventions for oxoacids
Anion’s “-ate” changes to “-ic”
Anion’s “-ite” changes to “-ous”
State the naming conventions of binary covalent compounds
Lower group number element goes first
Second element is added with the “-ide” root
Numerical prefixes are added to both elements to indicate their number of atoms
