HUMANITIES
Came from the Latin word "humanus" meaning refined, cultured and human.
IMPORTANCE OF HUMANITIES
1. Man needs an image of himself
2. Understanding of his natures
3. Necessary for the development of a complete, social man
4. Provides man with a measure of his own passion and desire
5. Regulate man's behavior.
ART
Comes from the Aryan root word AR which means to put together; Latin word ARS which means skills/ability.
VISUAL ART
That are primarily seen, occupies space. Examples: paintings, sculptures and architectures.
AUDITORY ARTS
Heard, timed arts; exist in time. Examples: music and poetry.
FILM
Refers to the art of putting together successions of still images in order to create an illusion of movement.
PERFORMANCE ART
A live art and the artist's medium is mainly the human body which he or she uses to perform, but also employs other kinds of art such as visual art, props, or sound.
DANCE
Is a series of movements that follows the rhythm of the music accompaniment.
LITERARY ART
Goes beyond the usual professional, academic, journalistic, and other technical form of writing.
Focuses on writing using a unique style, not following a specific form or norm.
THEATER
Uses live performers to present accounts or imaginary events before a live audience. Usually follows a script, though not to be confused with literary arts.
APPLIED ARTS
Incorporate elements of style and design to everyday items with the aim of increasing their aesthetical value. Brings beauty, charm, and comfort into useful everyday things.
COMBINED/PERFORMING ARTS
Combines visual & auditory elements. Examples: drama & theatre, dancing, cinema & TV, opera.

Art is Universal

ART IS UNIVERSAL
Art has been created by all people at all times, in all countries and it lives because its well-liked, and enjoyed.
ART IS NOT NATURE
Art is made by man, whereas nature is a given around us. They can be considered opposites.
ART INVOLVES EXPERIENCES
There can never be appreciation of art without experience.
ANCIENT WORLD
It meant using the bare hands to produce something that will be useful to one's day-to-day life. Greeks had no word for 'fine art'. Greek techne and Latin ars referred to 'the human ability to make and perform'.
MEDIEVAL LATIN
It meant any special form of book-learning, such as grammar, logic, magic, or astrology. No distinction between fine arts and crafts.
EARLY RENAISSANCE
Artist saw their activities merely as craftsmanship, devoid of connotations now attached to art.
17TH CENTURY
When the problem and idea of aesthetics began to unfold distinctly from technical workmanship.
18TH CENTURY
Evolved to distinguish between the fine arts and the useful arts. Before this, 'artist' and 'artisan' were interchangeable.

Functions of Art: Personal (expression of oneself), Social (public display and celebration, affect behavior), Physical (utilitarian)
EXPRESSIONS OF ART
Subject - visual focus; Content - meaning communicated; Form Composition - overall organization of artwork.
SUBJECT OF ARTS
Nature, People and events, Myths and legends, Spiritual and religious beliefs
REPRESENTATIONAL ART
Refers to object or events in the real world; identifiable and recognizable.
NON-REPRESENTATIONAL ART
Does not reference real world. Focuses on shapes, lines, emotion, concepts. Abstract art.
CONTENT IN ART
Factual - basic recognizable meaning; Conventional - established interpretation; Subjective - meanings based on viewer circumstances.
TWO-DIMENSIONAL MEDIA
Two-dimensional - width and height, has plane/picture frame. Examples: Drawings, Paintings
THREE-DIMENSIONAL MEDIA
Three-dimensional - has depth, appreciated through tactile sense. Examples: Sculpture, Assembling, Modeling, Carving, Casting, Crafts, Architecture
