Culture

is the sum of learned ways of doing, feeling and thinking within a social group. Includes knowledge, beliefs, skills, morals, laws and customs

Subculture

group of persons within larger culture who have own identity but relate to total culture who have own identity but relate to total culture

cause and treatment for illness

-natural: due to weather, food, contaminated water

-supernatural: caused by God, demons, spirits

-metaphysical: health maintained in nature

cultural bound illnesses

these are disordered restricted to a particular culture because of a certain psychosocial characteristic of the people

Believe health is result of external events or objects, e.g. hot-and-cold theory

feelings of bewilderment, confusion, disorganization, frustration and the inability to adapt to differences in language and the word meaning, activities and customs that are a part of a new culture

4 stages of culture shock

1. Honeymoon Phase : excitement about being in new country

2. Disenchanted Phase : person feels stuck, depressed not what they were expecting

3. Beginning resolution Phase: new culture becomes easier

4. Effective Function Phase: Person becomes bicultural

antidote for culture shock

-Look for similarities

-Be interested in new culture

-Ask questions

-Learn the language

-Seek support system

Religion

-belief in a supernatural or divine force

-the first amendment: every citizen has the right to exercise their religious and spiritual beliefs (not synonymous with spirituality)

spirituality

-quality that goes beyond religious affiliation includes reverence, awe, meaning, and purpose sustains during stress, illness or death defined differently by cultures

-awareness of inner self, greater than ones self

-to every human there seems to be a spiritual dimension
