Gametogenesis
The formation of gametes (sperm, eggs).
Gametogenesis
The process by which a diploid (2n/2c) cell undergoes meiosis to form haploid (1n/1c) gametes.
Phase 1 of Gametogenesis
Primordial germ cells form in extraembryonic tissue and migrate to the gonad.
Phase 2 of Gametogenesis
Germ cell number increases by mitosis.
Phase 3 of Gametogenesis
Chromosome number is reduced by meiosis.
Phase 4 of Gametogenesis
Maturation of eggs and sperm.
Primordial germ cells
The cell lineage that becomes the gametes.
Genital ridge
Tissue where PGCs settle after migrating from the yolk sac.
GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone)
Hormone produced by the hypothalamus that instructs the pituitary to produce LH and FSH.
Leydig cells
Cells of the testis that respond to LH by producing testosterone.
Sertoli cells
Cells that respond to FSH (and also T) and initiate spermatogenesis
Spermiogenesis
Process of spermatids becoming mature sperm.
Spermiation
Final step that releases mature spermatozoa into the lumen.
Capacitation
The final step of sperm development that occurs within the female reproductive tract.
