Animal cells will swell and burst when placed in a hypotonic solution. Explain what happens to plant cells when they are placed in a hypotonic solution.

Water moves into the plant cell by osmosis into the vacuole. The cell wall prevents the cell from bursting.

Potato chip A is transferred from the distilled water into a concentrated salt solution. Explain what will happen to the cells in potato chip A.

The potato chip will lose mass as the water moves out by osmosis from a high concentration of water molecules to a low concentration of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane.
