Suited to generate research concerning empirically supported treatments.
Qualitative designs
Offers insight into how different interventions may impact clients.
Empirical Literature
Originating in or based on observation or experience; seeks to verify or negate specific questions by collecting and analyzing data.
Non-empirical Literature
Literature reviews, practice pieces, and conceptual works.
Probability sampling
Involves random selection of participants.
Nonprobability sampling
Solicitation of volunteers and utilization of participants; a realistic, cost-effective way to obtain participants.
Convenience sampling
Type of non-probability sampling that involves being drawn from that part of the population that is close to hand.
Reliability
Consistency of a measure; scores are lower than .70 indicate inability to guarantee similar scores at different times.
Validity
The extent to which the measures used actually assessed the constructs of interest.
Effect size
Tells us the relationship between variables or the differences between groups.
Research ethics
The study or science of right and wrong—of what one ought to do when confronted with conflicting values or obligations.
Research integrity
Commitment to intellectual honesty and personal responsibility in research.
Minimal three principles for conducting research with humans
Respect for persons, beneficence, and justice.
Respect for persons
Autonomy and protections for vulnerable populations in research.
Informed consent
Fully disclosing risks, duration, and confidentiality in research participation.
