1. Dunkirk (May–June 1940)

What happened

  • After Germany invaded France, Belgium, and Holland, the Allies were trapped near the French coast at Dunkirk.

  • The German army stopped their advance for a few days instead of attacking immediately.

  • This allowed over 300,000 British and Allied soldiers to evacuate across the English Channel back to Britain.

Why this was a mistake

  • Hitler could have destroyed the British Expeditionary Force entirely.

  • Letting them escape gave Britain the core of its army to fight later.

SUPER IMPORTANT:
The “Halt Order” at Dunkirk is considered one of Hitler’s biggest early mistakes, as it allowed Britain to remain a key enemy.

2. Battle of Britain (July–October 1940)

2. Battle of Britain (July–October 1940)What happened

  • Germany planned to gain air superiority over Britain to allow a full invasion.

  • The Luftwaffe attacked airfields, radar stations, and cities.

  • Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) successfully defended the skies.

Why this was a mistake

  • Hitler underestimated British resistance.

  • Shifting attacks to cities (the Blitz) gave the RAF time to rebuild.

  • Germany never gained air superiority, so an invasion (Operation Sea Lion) had to be abandoned.

SUPER IMPORTANT:
The failure to defeat Britain kept the Western Front active and allowed Britain to be a base for later Allied operations.

3. Invasion of Russia – Operation Barbarossa (June 1941)

What happened

  • Hitler broke the Nazi-Soviet Pact and invaded the USSR.

  • Germany initially advanced quickly, but:

    • The Soviet army retreated and regrouped

    • German supply lines became overstretched

    • The harsh Russian winter and lack of preparation caused huge losses

Why this was a mistake

  • Germany was fighting a two-front war, which Hitler had promised to avoid.

  • Millions of German soldiers were lost, and momentum shifted to the Soviets.

  • This opened the Eastern Front, which became the largest and bloodiest front in WWII.

SUPER IMPORTANT:
Invading Russia weakened Germany severely and was a turning point in the war.

4. BIG IDEA (why these mistakes matter)

Hitler’s early mistakes show that:

  • Overconfidence can undo early successes

  • Strategic errors, like delaying at Dunkirk or invading Russia, allowed the Allies to survive and regroup

  • These mistakes eventually shifted the war in favor of the Allies
