Dehydration Synthesis (BUILDING)

A chemical reaction where two smaller molecules (monomers) join to form a larger molecule (polymer).

- Process: Removes a water molecule (H2O) to create a new covalent bond.

- Bond Type: Forms glycosidic (sugars), peptide (amino acids) or ester (lipids) bonds.

- Result: Molecule gets bigger/more complex.

Hydrolysis (BREAKING)

A chemical reaction that breaks a large molecule (polymer) back into its individual subunits (monomers).

- Process: Literally "water splitting" - water is added to break the bond.

- Context: Occurs during digestion to release stored energy.

- Result: Polymer gets smaller.
