The trauma can cause long term psychological issues such as PTSD or anxiety
What is displacement from traditional homelands?
Displacement occurs when individuals or groups are forced to leave their homes due to external pressrues such as development, war or natural distasters
What can displacement from homelands lead to?
Loss of homeland distrupts cultural identity, social networks, and spiritual connection to land

What is personal identity?
Personal identity refers to unique characteristics that make someone who they are. It is shaped by your experiecnes, personality and life choices
Things you can’t control (where you were raised), as well as how you choose to express yourself (clothing, hobbies, beliefs)
constantly evolving _ influence how you see your place in the world
major world events → disruption of daily life, routines, stability, loss of homes, belongings, employment or routine, which can shake their sense of self identity
disruptions can lead to stress, grief and mental health challenges, increasing vulnerability to illness
personal identity may shift as people adapt to new circumstances and responsibilities in response to crisis
What is social identity?
Social identity is how individuals define themselves in relation to groups they belong to
membership in social groups such as family, peers, teams, schools or clubs
influences behaviours, roles, sense of belonging
how people treat or view you within these groups affect your confidence and wellbeing
displacement + evacuation often separates individuals from friends, family and community groups
loss → reduce social support which is essential for mental and emotional wellbeing
long term location change + living arrangements may weaken traditional support net2works
shared experiences of adversity can also strengthen community bonds and create a renewed sense of solidarity
What is cultural identity?
A sense of belonging to a particular culture or ethnic group
language, traditions, values, relgiion, food and shared history
connects people to heritage and community
shape perspectives on health, family roles and lifestyle choices
forced relocation + distruction of land → disconnected individuals from cultural practices, stories and sacred places
loss of jobs, especially tourism, hospitality or local businesses, may distrupt traditional livelihoods tied to place + identity
communities may feel diepowerment if separated from culture
cultural identity can be strengthened/reshaped as people work to perserve, adapt or rediscover traiditons in new settings
