behavior and biology. It
includes ways our bodies
develop and respond
sexually, includes sexual
acts: kissing, touching,

shaped these feelings and
values.

New cards
Erogenous zones
Sensitive areas of the body from which
instinctual satisfactions can be obtained

New cards
Psychosexual stages
Sigmund Freud believed that children can
gain sexual gratification from any part of their bodies, and
during childhood, they go through 5 psychosexual stages that
shape their adult personality
4
New cards
Psychosexual stages
Freud proposed that we go through a series of psychosexual
stages in predetermined sequence during childhood. These
stages contain activities that revolve around a certain
erogenous zone - an area of our body that is sensitive to
stimulation.
5
New cards
Psychosexual stages
by successfully moving from one
psychosexual stage to the next, we develop a healthy
personality. Failure to resolve issues or getting stuck at any of
the psychosexual stages will result in a problematic personality.

Lust
testosterone and estrogen
initial stage of love

developed due to human instinct to mate and procreate with a partner.
17
New cards
Attraction
dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin
We begin to irrationally and idealize our lover. The initial stages of feeling good when meeting someone is attraction and not love
18
New cards
Attachment
oxytocin, vasopressin
In this stage, the passion for each other turns into attachment towards your significant other
19
New cards
Dr. Helen Fisher
broken down love into lust, attraction, and attachment, characterized by hormones stemming from the brain
20
New cards
Lust
is driven by the desire for sexual gratification. The
evolutionary basis for this stems from our need to
reproduce, a need shared among all living things. Through
reproduction, organisms pass on their genes, and thus
contribute to the perpetuation of their species.
21
New cards
Attraction
seems to be a distinct, though closely related,
phenomenon. While we can certainly lust for someone we are
attracted to, and vice versa, one can happen without the other.
Attraction involves the brain pathways that control "reward"
behavior, which partly explains why the first few weeks or
months of a relationship can be so exhilarating and even
all-consuming
22
New cards
Attraction
High levels of dopamine and a related hormone,
norepinephrine, are released during attraction. These
chemicals make us giddy, energetic, and euphoric, even leading
to decreased appetite and insomnia - which means you actually
can be so "in love" that you can't eat and can't sleep. In fact,
norepinephrine, also known as noradrenalin, may sound
familiar because it plays a large role in the fight or flight
response, which kicks into high gear when we're stressed and
keeps us alert.
23
New cards
Attachment
is the predominant factor in long-term
relationships. While lust and attraction are pretty much
exclusive to romantic entanglements, attachment
mediates friendships, parent-infant bonding, social
cordiality, and many other intimacies as well. The two
primary hormones here appear to be oxytocin and
vasopressin

25
New cards
Oxytocin
often nicknamed "cuddle hormone" for this
reason. Like dopamine, oxytocin is produced by the
hypothalamus and released in large quantities during sex,
breastfeeding, and childbirth. This may seem like a very
strange assortment of activities - not all of which are
necessarily enjoyable - but the common factor here is that
all of these events are precursors to bonding.
26
New cards
Triangular theory of love
holds that love can be
understood in terms of three components that together
can be viewed as forming the vertices of a triangle. The
triangle is used as a metaphor, rather than as a strict
geometric model. These three components are intimacy,
passion, and decision/commitment. Each component
manifests a different aspect of love.
27
New cards
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
the most
common STI in the United States, but most people
with the infection have no symptoms. These pink
or flesh-colored bumps can itch, cause discomfort,
and bleed. _____ can cause some health effects that
are preventable with vaccines.
28
New cards
Herpes
is one of the most contagious — and costly
— STDs around. ____ is a common STD,
but most people with the infection do not know
they have it. While there is no cure, there are
medicines available that can prevent or shorten
outbreaks. These medicines also can make it less
likely to pass the infection on.
29
New cards
Syphilis
Direct contact with a ____ sore, called
a chancre, can lead to transmission. The infection
may begin with a round, firm, painless sore located
on the penis, vagina, anus, or mouth. Sometimes,
these sores go unnoticed, because they are
painless, and then symptoms clear. However, the
infection continues to advance, during this stage. If
untreated, later stages of the disease can damage
the heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, joints, and
skin
30
New cards
Trichomoniasis

parasitic infection caused by the parasite
_____ vaginalis. It has serious implications
for pregnant women, according to a 2021
International Journal of Obstetrics and
Gynaecology review. This parasitic infection can
lead to preterm delivery, low birthweight, and
pre-labor rupture of membranes, researchers have
found.
31
New cards
Gonorrhea
was so problematic in 19th-century
England that parliament passed a law to thwart
"the perilous infirmity of burning." There's also
evidence that the disease plagued the Roman
army as far back as 100 BCE.
32
New cards
Chlamydia
The bacterium ______ trachomatis is
responsible for this STD, which can have no signs or
symptoms. Others, however, may experience burning
during urination or abnormal vaginal or penile
discharge; can also lead to PID in women and
subsequent infertility, ectopic pregnancy
33
New cards
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
___ can lead
to AIDS—the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
People may experience swollen glands, fever, muscle
aches, headaches, or extreme fatigue lasting for 2-4
weeks. Then, the disease progresses to "clinical
latency," during which symptoms can vanish for years,
depending on whether a person receives treatment..
34
New cards
Freud
