Chemistry
The study of composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter, and happens all around you everyday.
Matter
Another word for all substances that make up our world
Scientific Method
A set of general principles that help describe how a scientist thinks,
First step of scientific Method
Observation
Second step of the Scientific Method
Hypothesis
Third step of the scientific Method
Experiements
Fourth step of the scientific method
Conclusion
What are the four steps to the scientific method
Observations
Hypothesis
Experiments
Conclusion
Obervations
Looking at or measuring something in the world to gather facts using your senses or tools.
Hypothesis
Making an educated guess or a testable and falsifiable explanation that predicts an outcome.
Experiment
Designing and running a controlled test to see if your hypothesis is right or wrong.
Conclusion
Deciding whether the data supports or refutes your hypothesis.
What are properties of Matter?
The characteristics used to describe, identify, and distinguish substances.
Pure Substances
Have a fixed or definite composition
Mixtures
Contain two or more different substances that are physically mixed, but not chemically combined
Element
A pure substance made of only one type of atom
Compound
A pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically bonded together
What are the two types of pure substances?
Elements & Compounds
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are physically combined, not chemically
Homogenous Mixture
A mixture that is uniform throughout. It looks like one substance, has the same composition throughout. The different parts of the mixture are not visible.
Heterogenous Mixtures
A mixture that is not uniform throughout. You can often see the different substances or parts.
What is a measurement?
A quantity that includes a number and a unit
What is the SI System?
The International Standard of Units, the standard system of meausrement used in science
What is the SI unit for length?
Meter (m)
What is the SI unit for volume?
Cubic Meter (m³)
What is the SI unit for mass?
Kilogram (kg)
What is the SI unit for temperature?
kelvin (k)
What is the SI unit for time?
seconds (s)
