What is Anatomy?
The study of internal and external body structures and the relationships between these structures.
Microanatomy
Subdivisions of anatomy requiring a microscope to study, includes cytology and histology.
Cytology
The study of individual cells.
Histology
The study of tissues (groups of cells).
Gross Anatomy
The study of body structures that are visible to the eye, such as bones and organs.
Levels of Organization
Hierarchical arrangement from simple to complex: chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system, and organism.
Chemical level
The most basic level of organization, consisting of atoms that combine to form molecules.
What forms the basic unit of structure and function in the body?
Cells.
Tissue level
A group of structurally similar cells that perform a common function.
What are the major levels of organization in the human body?
Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system, organism.
Organ level
Two or more tissues working together for a common function.
What is the function of the stomach?
Digestion.
Organ system level
Several related organs working together to accomplish a common purpose.
What is the function of the respiratory system?
Respiration.
