Reactions of metals - group 13 and group 14
Reactivity- Ba»»Be
Halogens- yield MX2
Oxygen- yield oxides
Water- yield hydroxide
Reaction with water
Exception - Be- doesn't form hydroxide
PTR- only Ba reacts vigorously at room temperature
Reaction with oxygen
Be and Mg- interactive but burn with dazzling white flames
Ca, Sr, Ba- very reaction and stored under oil to keep them from contact with air
Sr and Ba form peroxides
Group 14 elements
Liberation of H2 gas- metallic elements like Pb and Sn do not react with water but do react with acids
Inert pair effect - in group 14, going down decreases shielding - increase nuclear attraction - s electrons non available
Implication- stability of Hughes OS (+4) decreases going down. Pb is more stable in +2
Upper elements like carbon and silicon are more stable in +4 state
CO2 is more stable than CO.
SiO2 is a stable compound but SiO doesn't exists
