Ionic Compound
A compound formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions, typically consisting of a metal and a non-metal.
Cobalt(III) Oxide
The proper name for Co₂O₃ indicating cobalt in the +3 oxidation state.
Bond Order
The number of chemical bonds between a pair of atoms; in certain cases, it indicates the strength of the bond.
Formal Charge
The charge difference between the number of valence electrons in free atoms and the number of electrons assigned to an atom in a molecule.
Molecular Geometry
The three-dimensional arrangement of the atoms that constitute a molecule.
Hybridization
The concept of mixing atomic orbitals to generate new hybrid orbitals suitable for the pairing of electrons to form chemical bonds.
Steric Number
The total number of electron domains (bonding and lone pairs) around a central atom in a molecule.
Dipole Moment
A measure of the separation of positive and negative charges in a system; it indicates the polarity of a molecule.
Empirical Formula
A formula that shows the simplest whole-number ratio of elements in a compound.
Molarity (M)
A concentration measurement denoting the number of moles of solute per liter of solution.
