Separation of Powers

divides federal government and power into three branches

Checks and Balances

gives each branch specific powers to limit any branch from becoming too powerful

Federalism

system of government where power is divided between national and state government

Legislative Branch

making laws, approving budgets

Judicial Branch

supreme court, federal courts

Executive Branch

the president, vice president

Enumerated Powers

powers granted to the federal government (mainly Congress)

Elastic clause

gives congress power to pass all laws needed to execute its enumerated powers

Implied Powers

powers of national government that isn’t explicitly written in the constitution

Supremacy Clause

the constitution and federal laws are “supreme law of the land”

Federalists

favor of a strong national government

Anti-Federalists

against powerful national government
