Eurocommunism
An Italian Communist approach to make communism more popular and more acceptable by dropping it's support of the Marxist portion of the ideology.

Stagflation
A term used to describe the combination of high inflation and high unemployment. This happened during the years from 1973 to the mid 1980's in the United States.
Postmodernism
This rejects the modern Western belief in an objective truth and instead focuses on the relative nature of reality and knowledge.

Permissive Society
The term used to describe society in America and Western Europe after WWII. It saw a drastic rise in acceptance of behaviors and practices, such as sexual practices, that were often looked down upon before the war.

Feminism
A term used to describe the women's liberation movement. The goal of many of them was the bringing about of true equality with men.

Brezhnev Doctrine
This policy stated that it was the right of the Soviet Union to intervene if socialism was threatened in another socialist state. This would be used to justify the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Détente
A relaxing of the tensions and relations between the two super powers during the rule of Brezhnev.

The Prague Spring
The term used to describe the easing of harsh regulations by the communists and many Eastern European nations taking advantage and even talk of withdrawing from Soviet partnerships. It ends with Soviet invasion and a return to the old, more controlling policies from Moscow.

Margaret Thatcher
Great Britain's first female prime minister. She was known for being a strong, conservative leader who dominated British politics during the 1980's.

The Domino Theory
The American policy that sought to stop the spread of communism so it did not spread to the surrounding countries and become an even bigger threat. This was the view towards many nations that were previous European colonies and were seen as likely targets for Communist aggression and corruption.

The Second Vietnam War
This was a prime example of American involvement in world affairs to try to prevent the Domino Theory from taking effect. The United States would enter the conflict to try to stop the Communist North from invading and taking over the Democratic South in this nation, 1965 to 1973.

Kent State University
The site of a Vietnam War protest in 1970 that would see the National Guard use force that would result in the death of four students. This event would lead to even more protests against the United State's participation in the war.

Mao's Cultural Revolution
A violent revolutionary movement in China meant to destroy every vestige of the old way of life and replace it with total obedience to the new Communist order, and a truly classless society, led by Mao.

Space Race
The term used to describe the United States and the Soviet Union's attempts to beat each other in the field of space travel and technology. The United States would gain a large win with it's maned trip to the moon in 1969.

Green Parties
Political Parties that would form in Europe and then in the United States that would focus on environmental issues and causes.

Soviet Invasion of Afganistan
This invasion in 1979 would see the end of Detente and a cooling of relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. It would lead to a renewed arms race and tense relations.
