Citizenship
A person with certain rights & duties under a government.
Automatic Citizenship by birth
Any person born on US soil or to US citizen parents is automatically a citizen.
Naturalization
The process by which a foreign national earns citizenship over time.
Legal Immigrants
Individuals who have written permission to live in the USA, often holding a Visa or a Green Card.
Illegal Immigrants
Individuals who do not have legal permission to be in the USA and cannot engage in legal activities.
Visas/Green Cards
Formal permission for a non-citizen to reside in a nation.
US Immigration Act of 1990
Legislation that prioritizes visa allocation for certain groups based on family ties, job offers, and country of origin.
Melting Pot
A metaphor for the US being a mix of cultures existing together.
Salad Bowl
A metaphor for the US where many cultures retain their unique identities instead of blending into one.
Naturalization Requirements
The five requirements for naturalization include filing a declaration of intent, residing in the US for 5 years, being 18 years old, passing a naturalization test, and taking the citizenship oath.
