Subatomic particles
Particles found within the atom, mainly protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Atoms
The smallest unit that something could be, without stopping being that thing. Ex. an atom of gold is the smallest piece of gold, if it was any smaller it wouldn't be gold.
molecules
Groups of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds. Ex. Water (H20) Carbon Dioxide (C02), etc
macromolecules.
Molecules made up of hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands atoms. ex. carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids
organelle
tiny specialized structures inside each cell that carry out a specific function. ex. mitochondria, ribosome, nucleus, cell wall
Cell
the basic building blocks of all living things. All cells carry out a function. ex. prokaryote, eukaryote, animal cell, plant cell, skin cell.
Tissue
A group of similar cells that perform the same function. ex. muscles, heart cells, skin cells,
Organs
Groups of tissues that work together to perform a complex function. ex. heart, skin, liver, kidneys
Organ Systems
groups of organs working together ex. cardiovascular system, endocrine system, digestive system, excretory system
Organisms
A living thing that has the ability to function independently. ex. person, hyena, mushroom.
Populations
groups of the same organism living in the same area. ex. squirrels, patch of grass, oak trees.
Communities
groups of different organisms living in a defined area. ex. westchester, masters, New york.
Ecoystems
community + non living things (water, soil, sunlight)
Biomes
groups of ecosystems with the same climate and same dominant populations.
Biosphere
The part of earth in which life exists.
Science
A philosophy used to answer questions about the natural world through observation and experimentation.
