Communication (as a Process)
A foundational principle stating that communication operates as a step-by-step or continuous process.
Purpose in Communication
A principle stating that communication is utilized specifically to meet the purpose of a person.
Forms of Communication
A principle highlighting that communication can be expressed through written, verbal, nonverbal, and visual means.
Intended or Unintended Communication
A principle stating that communication messages can occur either with deliberate purpose (intended) or without conscious planning (unintended).
Complex Process of Communication
A principle establishing that communication involves intricate, multi-layered steps rather than simple one-way transmissions.
Context
An element of communication referring to the environment, situation, or background surrounding the communication event.
Sender
The element of communication referring to the individual or entity who creates and transmits a message.
Encoding
The element of communication representing the process of translating thoughts and ideas into a symbolic, transmissible message.
Message
The primary information, idea, or thought that is being communicated.
Channel
The medium, path, or route through which a message is sent to the receiver.
Decoding
The process by which the receiver translates and interprets the received message.
Receiver
The intended target or audience who gets and processes the sender's message.
Feedback
The response, answer, or reaction given by the receiver back to the sender.
Noise
Any interference, distraction, or barrier that disrupts or modifies the communication message.
Communication Modes
A channel through which one expresses his/her communicative intent.
Verbal Communication
A basic mode of communication that occurs when engaging in speaking with others, executed in formal or informal ways, and concerning the caliber and complexity of words.
Written Communication
A basic mode of communication that uses written formats (such as emails, memos, reports, or posts) to disseminate information in a clear and concise manner.
Non-verbal Communication
A basic mode of communication that includes facial expressions, posture, eye contact, hand movements, and touch.
Visual Communication
The practice of using visual elements such as signs, symbols, imagery, maps, graphs, and charts to communicate information or ideas quickly and easily.
