Reconstruction Amendments
The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments that abolished slavery, granted citizenship rights, and secured voting rights for Black men respectively.
Freedman's Bureau
A federal agency created in 1865 to assist freed slaves in their transition from slavery to freedom, providing food, housing, education, and legal support.
Black Codes
Laws enacted in the South after the Civil War to restrict the rights of newly freed African Americans and maintain white supremacy.
Jim Crow Laws
State and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the Southern United States, enacted after the Reconstruction period.
NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)
An organization founded in 1909 to fight for civil rights and against racial discrimination.
Plessy v. Ferguson
An 1896 Supreme Court case that upheld racial segregation under the 'separate but equal' doctrine.
Double Consciousness
A term coined by W.E.B. Du Bois that describes an internal conflict experienced by subordinated groups in an oppressive society.
The Great Migration
The mass movement of millions of African Americans from the rural South to urban areas in the North and West from around 1916 to 1970.
Convict Leasing
A system where prisoners were leased out to private enterprises for labor, often under brutal conditions.
40 Acres and a Mule
An unfulfilled promise made to freed slaves for land and compensation, symbolizing the broken promises of Reconstruction.
