Nation
Group of people united by a common language, culture, descent, history, or ethnicity
Nation-State
A country with physical borders and a single government
Non-Nationalist Loyalty
Loyalty to something outside of a nation such as class, religion, family, region, ideology, or race
Geographic Nationalism
Nationalism created by the land and environment which isolates people from other groups
Linguistic Nationalism
Nationalism created by loyalty to a common language
Ethnic Nationalism
People united by a common race / ethnicity
Religious Nationalism
Nationalism created by a an affinity for a common religion
Cultural Nationalism
Nationalism created by a shared way of life
Political Nationalism
Comes from a desire for self-determination and sovereignty
Civic Nationalism
Nationalism created by decision of a people to live under a common set of rules
The Estates System
System of French government which gave all power to the nobility and the clergy, and none to the majority of French people
Absolute Monarchy
System in which all decisions in a state are made by one individual, with no checks on their power
The National Assembly
Government created by the people of France to represent their interests
Storming of the Bastille
Event in which the French people united against the monarchy - created a collective consciousness amongst the French people
Collective Consciousness
An awareness shared by a large group of people - creates a feeling of belonging - based on a shared memory or myth
The Reign of Terror
Time in which the French Revolutionaries turned on each other and began executing anyone who did not support the revolution
Declaration of the Rights of Man
French constitution which created equality for all people in France - aided sense of nationalism
Napoleon Bonaparte
French general - became a national hero to the French, spread ideas of the revolution through Europe
Royal Proclamation
Document which first recognized First Nations people as Nations with a claim to territory
Numbered Treaties
Nation to nation agreements signed between Canada and the First Nations people
Assembly of First Nations
Organization created to help unite First Nations and voice common concerns to the Canadian government
Stateless Nation
Group of people who desire and can be considered entitled to a territory of their own, but do not possess one
Israel Palestine Conflict
Two nations fighting over the same territory in order to secure protection and self-determination for their people
Sovereignty
Political authority to control one's own affairs
Voluntary Balkanization
Internet and technology is being used to create like minded communities outside the nation - can lead to polarization
Global Village
Idea that people should abandon national communities and treat all members of humanity as if they were part of an individual's community
Cultural Uniformity
Belief that people within the nation should have a common culture and values - usually associated with nationalism
